I'm using an S-Series PBX on a network with a VPN on the network. I set up everything locally, and tried Linkus from my Android phone over the WiFi, everything seems to work great. When I turn off the WiFi and connect to the VPN I can't connect to the PBX server from the Linkus app.
I tested from a PC and I have bi-directional packet transfer on port 8111 between my PC and my phone over the VPN, but I still can't connect to the PBX.
Any thoughts?
I am not sure I follow the scenario exactly, so I will respond with what I think the query is about -
You did not state what type of VPN or how integrated into the network. I assume it to be device to site VPN and further assume the WI-FI to be on the same LAN segment or within the same subnet. If this is this is the case, then the VPN does not come into play as the devices are essentially peer to one another and have full access to ports.
There should also be similar results with the other aspect unless the VPN is not established or configured incorrectly. Again, not knowing more about the setup makes it problematic to know where to start, but for testing,
1. Using the VPN, you could see if the extension is registered with the correct IP of the Linkus device. If not, then it could be that the VPN is not established which may be a misconfiguration or possibly your router not supporting the or passing thru the VPN type.
2. you might consider removing the VPN and then doing some port forwarding in your router to the PBX and insuring that SIP ALG is off and that the NAT is set correctly for your needs and then test. Presumably, this would remove the VPN aspect and assure you that the functionality is there which would tend to point back to the VPN.

You're absolutely right, I didn't give any real information there, I wrote it out after a long frustrating day of things not working ;)
First thing's first, yes, the WiFi is on the same network as the PBX, and when I connected Linkus like that everything looked okay. The VPN is the built in PPTP of our tp-link router (yeah, I know, not the safest, but all for the test, afterwards I'll use heavier protection on the VPN).
What I did yesterday, that didn't seem to work, is that when connected through the WiFi with a local connection (without the VPN) everything worked fine, but when disconnecting the WiFi and opening the VPN my Linkus kept telling me the server can't be reached. When I tested a packet sender between my phone (on the VPN) and my computer (on the same network as the PBX) I got packets sent and received with no error, so I know the VPN works.
Today's update was that I found that if the Linkus was connected (through the local network) and then I change to the VPN, the app tells me there's no connection, but I can send and receive calls with no problem! When I look at the PBX Monitor I see that extension as disconnected but with the IP address allocated to my phone in the VPN. All this is true only if I stay connected, the moment I log off I can't log back on.
The other thing I've noticed is that when running on WiFi from another network (not the one with the PBX) with the VPN connected, everything seems to work, this is only an issue on mobile data. Is there some configuration I'm missing?
Bottom line, I seem to be able to stay connected on mobile data, but both the app and the PBX recognize me as disconnected, but over WiFi (in any network, so long as I have the VPN running) I can connect and disconnect freely. My phone can freely reach all other points and functions in the network, so I don't think it's a problem in the phone or VPN configuration.
Do you have any idea what this is? Is there any information I'm missing?
I no longer use TP-LInk, but I do not think this to be an issue.
If I understand it, you can use a foreign WI-FI service, while using the VPN, and all is well. This implies that it is more related to the cellular carriage or perhaps how Linkus is determining its location and then using same to formulate the messaging that the PBX sees.
When I use a VPN, I generally use IPSec.
One other thing -
Compare the IP address while on cellular to that of the other Wi-Fi network. I am wondering if perhaps the WI-FI network is using the same private network IP segment and so the NAT works correctly, but when using cellular is sees it as foreign.
The local and remote ip addresses are not what they seem.The linkus app treats every WiFi network that you connect to as local.
It doesn't know your using a vpn.
Use a dynamic dns address for both instead and use local dns records to redirect linkus when you are in the local WiFi or vpn.
